I think it's more of the quick and unnatural life the flowers have when presented as wrapped and gifted marks of affection.

A cologne bottle is made to be used till it's empty, so goes for the wine, dessert and anything that may resemble it, while the flower's life comes to an abrupt end in an unnatural way (well, at least for the flowers themselves...), truly a potted plant would seem more along the line of the examples you gave since they do eventually to a natural end that was meant when the are born if they even do so (I've seen some of those plants lasting for years...).

Truly, I lament the bouquets' untimely demise...

Does that mean that you never drink wine because at some point the bottle is empty? Does that mean that you never give perfume or cologne because at some point it's either gone or goes bad? Does this mean that you never give or eat desserts because they are either all eaten or go bad? Your thoughts don't make much sense to me. There are things that possibly last for a long period of time(not many things any more...even exprensive electronics don't last forever) and there are things that you get short enjoyment out of. We all go to movies, go out to dinner, meet people for drinks, etc. and none of these last a long time, but we understand that for the short period of time that we are there we will get the most and best enjoyment that we can. Why can't we think of flowers in the same manner. Flowers are beautiful, people who give flowers feel good, people who receive flowers feel good, and they give us an enjoyment of beauty and health benefits while we have them. What is so bad about that??? Maybe if more people gave flowers, received flowers or bought more flowers for their homes people would be better off!
