Krellion’s Geek Journal – 6/12/2009
Welcome to this week’s episode of my Geek Journal, now brought to you in 100% digital glory! (oh wait, we’re already digital here… never mind)
Yes, the final DTV transition is here and that sound you hear is the 3% of the US population that aren’t ready as their TV sets go dark and/or snowy. Come on, you knew this was coming for years now! By midnight tonight in each time zone, most TV stations will have their analog transmitters turned off. This includes the ones that made the switch earlier in the year. Some will be providing a “night light” service, keeping their signal active for up to 30 days, but they will only be broadcasting information on the transition (for people late to the game) and emergency information. Most people are good to go, either getting their TV via cable or satellite, already having a DTV-ready TV set or set-top box, or just getting their TV shows via the internet (a tempting idea with how cable prices are rising). For my TV viewing experience, I make use of a nice 47″ LCD HDTV and TiVo Series 3 DVR (which supports DTV and HDTV).
I did see a couple of movies this past weekend (with friend and fellow Spwug writer Donnie Sturges). First was Land of the Lost, which I mentioned in my posting last week. Quite good and a lot of fun, especially when Bad Things⢠happened to Will Ferrell’s character. ^^ Second was Drag Me to Hell, where Sam Raimi did a great job revisiting his older past movies. Scared the crap out of me several times, which made it that much more awesome. No really good geek movies coming out this weekend unfortunately, but the month isn’t over yet.
Going to keep it short this week, so see you next time!
